Whiplash is one of the most common injuries that occurs because of automobile accidents. It is most commonly though that whiplash occurs when the neck is thrust forward and then abruptly backward when a vehicle is struck from behind. But what is actually happening is the car that is struck from behind is propelled forward leaving the occupant behind. This causes the head to extend backward first. Then as the body catches up with the car the head is then thrust forward. this happens at such great speed and with such great force that the the connective tissue in the neck such as muscles, tendons and ligament get over stretched. The muscle, tendons and ligaments can even rip or tear in such an accident. Typically this can cause inflammation, stiffness, pain, limited mobility and headaches. Once the connective tissue over stretched, ripped or torn they never heal like new. Chiropractic therapies and exercises are essential and are some of the only therapies available that can assist the neck to heal, as much as possible, like new.
