Should I visit a chiropractor for headache relief after an accident?
Yes and no. Headaches are a very common occurrences after an auto accidents. This is because the most common area for a headache to originate is the neck and then from head trauma. The first place you should go if experiencing a serious headache after an accident is the emergency room. They are equipped with the proper equipment to accurately determine if you have serious head trauma and treat it. If the headache is not serious and there has been no physical trauma to the head, then the best place to go first is your chiropractor. Chiropractic treatment is very effective in the relief not only headaches from accidents but all kinds of headaches that originate in the neck.
What should I expect at my appointment?
Your first visit to a chiropractor after an accident will include a thorough consultation and examination which will include a complete analysis of your symptoms with the severity and frequency of your headaches. X-rays of your areas of complaint are always taken in a trauma case to rule out fractures or dislocations. One your condition has been diagnosed a treatment plan is designed. Your chiropractor will most likely adjust the neck to correct misalignment especially if headaches are involved. This is a procedure done with the hands or an instrument and takes just a couple of seconds. You may hear popping as your as the adjustment is completed. This is normal and does not represent breaking, ripping or tearing in your neck. The sound is just a release of gas from the joints in the neck. Is there anything I can do between appointments to alleviate my headaches?
Yes. Be sure to get plenty of sleep each night and take steps to minimize your stress. Drink plenty of water each day to avoid headache-causing dehydration. We will be giving you stretching and strengthening exercises to do at home that are essential in your recovery process and relieving headaches.
